Chao are very sensitive creatures.If you want to take care of them be really careful.They are really joyful, but, if you yell at them or punish them you will have a one way ticket to sadness city.
Dancing Chao (Below)
To get a hero chao you have to pet a chao with a hero(Sonic,Tails,Knuckles). If you go to the black market buy hero fruit(200rings). To get Hero Garden make a hero chao(above).
To get a Dark chao just do the same as the hero chao but pet with villians and get dark fruit(200rings)
